Background
The Scheduled Caste (SC) population constitutes 16.1% of India’s demographic, with Punjab having the highest percentage of SC population, with 88.6 lakh people, making up 31.94% of the state's total population. Major concentration of SC population in districts SBS Nagar, Muktsar, Jalandhar, Faridkot, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, and Moga and with 73.33% of this population residing in rural areas.
About STI Cell
SC communities in Punjab face challenges such as economic disparity, low literacy, lacking of skills and limited knowledge of technology, resources, and unemployment etc. To bridge these gaps, PSCST has set up STI Cell for Scientific and Technological Empowerment of SC community of Punjab this initiative is Supported by Department of Science and Technology-Government of India. This necessitate the targeted interventions for this community for their economic development.
